MANJIMUP Speedway will host the penultimate round of the 2010-11 World Series Sprintcars Championship this Wednesday night.
This will be the first time the series heads to the South-West WA venue as the WSS big guns try to tame the fast, 520 metre track and a big crowd is expected for the inaugural midweek event.
And there is plenty at stake for the WSS regulars.
David Murcott leads the points chase on 3459 points, just ahead of Robbie Farr on 3441, Jason Johnson 3132, Steven Lines 3123 and Ian Madsen on 2846.
For the front runners it will be a chance to consolidate their points as they head into the grand final at the Perth Motorplex this Friday and
Saturday night.
For some of the other teams it is a chance to regroup after a gruelling couple of nights in Bunbury.
National champion Brooke Tatnell ended the night on the infield in Bunbury after a bone-crushing crash with Luch Monte.
Kerry Madsen was also a DNF after rubbing wheels with Johnson and then crashing out after eyeing off the win.
There have been a couple of changes to nominations this week.
The Titan Garages team will not be in action, unable to field a driver in the Q36 this week after what has been a testing summer for the professional Queensland-based team.
Wayne Rowett is also unable to race on Wednesday night due to work commitments but his car will be driven by Ryan Farrell for this one-show only.
Farrell will then return to the Hall Motorsport entry in Perth and Rowett will be back behind the wheel of the S41.
For Murcott it will be about building on his points lead.
"We will just try to keep doing what we are doing, finishing in the top four to five each night and the points will take care of themselves," he said on the Bunbury podium last Saturday night.
For Farr it will be about trying to peg back the gap.
After his win on the Preliminary feature on Friday night Farr talked about what is at stake with the points battle.
"It's a constant battle in your head, you know the consequences if you come unstuck this deep into the championship," Farr said.
"But at the end of the day if we tear up gear while trying to win this thing we can still hold our heads high."
And as for Johnson, well given the form he has been in over recent rounds he could come away with another win.
The driver of the Q47 has claimed five round wins this series and could mathematically still win the series despite missing the first two rounds, but a lot of things would have to fall his way.
The World Series round is also part of the WA-based AHG Sprintcar Series which will feature hometown heroes such as Monte, Jamie and Bradley Maiolo, Mark Wells, Jason Kendrick,
Ken Sartori and Ben Ellement all vying for honours.
When the WA sprintcars last raced on the Manjimup track is was Kendrick
Racing pilot Kerry Madsen who won. |
